looking for local growers for new farmer's market in sunnyslope

Does anyone have a listing of other farmers markets in our area. I live in Apache Junction and I'm looking for a place with a decent variety but a bit closer to home. Thank you, Linda

Little bugs and how to get rid of them

I have tiny little bugs on the leaves of my plants. The adults look like tiny black flies. What is an effective way to get rid of them?  I have a small garden that I was keeping covered in a "green-h…

I was reading a "Mother Earth" magazine last night that was talking about the benefits of using grass clippings as a nitrogen rich source for compost. I also know that chicken poo is a really high so…

Hi Bridgette, I too raise chickens and I love the feathery little buggers. I have also tried gardening this year and it's been challenging and a definite learning experience. I look forward to exchanging ideas. Linda

I think the best way to explain it is for you to watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXEgJXec_Zk&feature=related The concept can be used with just about any container, as long as you can create the wicking effect.

That is excellent! Thank you for sharing this with us and for showing us a good way to recycle!

Does it have a false bottom on it? How did you get it to wick if it's just a "drawer" or 5 sided box?

Very nice...and i see those little mushrooms you were talking about! Question on this "bucket"...what did you make it out of?

swiss Chard - Yes, Brocccoli - not yet. Wait until late summer/fall for the broccoli. You should look into peppers for planting now.

I compost my grass waste. I prepared a bed in early feb, that I will be planting next week. I Mulched with compost that had a lot of bermuda in it. I was purposely testing for grass growth. So far none. The roots do not break down, in fact I can eve…

Hey Linda: Chickens traditionally like grass clippings and many who have hens use them to keep bermuda grass in line. The problem with "grass" in Phoenix is that it is "bermuda" - the no. 2 noxious weed in the world. The stuff spreads by rhizome, s…

I would give it a try, the birds may like the trimmings, just make sure they have not been treated. If you start getting an ammonia smell take them out.

I'd say it's too late for more broccoli now but I've had great success with swiss chard over the summer. I grow a wide variety of greens in the fall and winter but always save growing chard for planting now as it holds up to the heat so well and eve…

Yes...I put garden lime in there as well. About a half cup mixed in to the soil about half way down. I couldn't find any that was not a small pellet though and earthbox recommends a powder form. I'll just have to see how it does.

Rope it in? Do you mean use a cage? Yes, when they get bigger I will prune and cage as necessary. I used kellogs all purpose granule/crumble fertilizer and put it in a ring around the top of the bucket, then covered with about a half inch of soil.…

Hello and thank you for the welcome. My husband and I are trying to eat healthier, garden, recycle, and live more environmentally conscious lives. I planted a garden this year and I would love to learn more about gardening in the desert, what grows best when, and to attend any event in which I can learn more about these new interests.

Thank you,
