Hi Charly, where did you find it? I am planning to attend tomorrow's City of Tempe's sub committee meetings. One of the agenda items is community gardens. I would like to make that point for lots more community gardens and composting.

Its true, I looked it up. That equals one hundred million dollars every month. And thats just AZ. What could it be for the whole country? If we used that money to give poor people land and then let poor people grow food for poor people, we would act…

Thank-you for posting Nayeema. I did the course. A concise presentation. Meaningful work is the basis of all money. The planet can support 12 billion if they may find meaningful work that does not harm the planet. We do not lack wealth or money, we…

I am simply pointing out how the life I and Ron Paul have led handicap us when it comes to being able to think outside the American box. One who does not have that difficulty would be a more effective thinker.

The problem with Ron Paul is his roots. He is who he is. We need an African American, hispanic, native American, or asian woman to pick up this cause and make it happen. Nayeema?

Controlled Decent: Economic Crisis Edition

Our collective gas cap is leaking into the Gulf of Mexico. In the business section of the AZ Repub this morning is a map depicting current permit requests for solar and wind generating stations here in Arizona. There are large color splotches all over our map where international companies wish to install massive solar and wind generating fields. Is that really the world we wish to build? Do we really want to live in a world with windmills and solar panels covering every inch of open space? Would… Continue

The Widget Free Life. (A Hadley Farmship Update...sort of)

Does anyone know anybody who has found a decent paying job? There are nine adults in our immediate family here in the Valley of the Sun. Of those nine only two are working. One of the workers must work two partime jobs to make it, and the other makes about two thirds of what they used to, and what they used to make wasn’t enough. That is the crux my friends, wages were too low before the crash and now they are half of that. What are you going to do about it?

Does anybody know anybody who has re… Continue

My friends the Aphids (A Hadley Farmship Update)

Something is happening at the farmship. Last year we had bugs. Lots of some, a few of others. We had a fairly significant aphid problem, minor squash and cucumber beetles, some caterpillars, some flies, a few white flies, flea beetles, and minor cut worms. The ladybug larvae and adults eventually came and the aphids became manageable. We only loss one small crop, spaghetti squash, and that was the treatment not the bugs.

We have been attempting to practice “No Squish”. After the squash bugs kil… Continue

Positive Vibrations (A Hadley Farmship Update)

Two years ago on the same Monday after the Bear Stearns collapse, my son arrived at his work place to find the doors shut. I was working on an elementry school in Maricopa and I remember sitting around the job trailor (do they still do that?) with the other foremen and discussing a thirties style run on the banks. Well, the feds more than doubled their garuntee on our deposits to 250,000 and garunteed another thirteen trillion in toxic assets that the "to big to fails" had dined on and everythin… Continue

Fifteen Months In: A Hadley Farmship Update

The Hadley Farmship is fifteen months old. The Hadley Farmship is on course. The Hadley Farmship just well may succeed. Followers of the farmship know that we are an experiment in relocalizing the food chain. The defination of what is success has been evolving through the months. The good news is that my expectations for the production ability of our little half acre permie site is increasing. The on the ground realities we have experienced over the last fifteen months have been encouraging.

Hey Charlie,
I apologie for the confusion at the event with Michael Brownlee. I got sick the night before and was unwell in the morning. I called Alex to let him know I wasn't coming but to go ahead. Changing Hands does not 'advertise' events unless they are paid for I think, so while we had the room in the back, I guess the front desk girl was not told to direct traffic there. Sorry Charlie. My bad.

If this date works for you, may I bring a pickup truck for about a cubic yard of manure for the BVR Neighborhood Garden (South Tempe)? thanks, alex

(Note: To download an application, please visit www.communityfoodbank.org and click on Marana Farm Youth Apprentice Program)
The Marana Farm, a 10-acre no-spray vegetable farm, is a project of The Community Food Bank’s Community Food Security Center. Now in our second growing season, we are dedicated to producing fresh, organic food, as well as contributing to the education, health, and food security of our community members. The Marana Farm is located off of Tangerine Rd in Marana, Arizona.
What is the Marana Farm Youth Apprentice Program?
Across the country, youth farming programs are changing lives and touching hearts. At the Community Food Security Center and the Marana Farm, we value giving young people the opportunity to develop a relationship with the food we eat and to consider how what we eat affects our health and our planet. The Youth Apprentice Program is a brand new program, in which youth ages 13-18 are hired to work on our farm, learn about our food system, and have fun while doing it!
Who will be hired for the program?
* Youth ages 13-18, who express interest in learning about farming and food systems.
* Youth who work well with others and demonstrate strong motivation and work ethic.
What is the purpose of the program?
* To engage local youth in growing food for their community, while addressing issues of nutritional poverty and hunger.
* To encourage nutrition and healthy food choices.
* To empower program participants to become educated voices and advocates within the food system.
* To introduce sustainable farming as a viable career option.
* To participate in daily farm activities and chores that support the Community Food Security Center’s mission of providing local, fresh food to the public.
* To bring together a diverse community of youth, to interact with the land in a positive way, and to have fun!
What kinds of activities will the Apprentices participate in?
* Apprentices will participate in all aspects of food production, including planting, harvesting, greenhouse cultivation, soil building, garden design, irrigation, marketing, and product distribution.
* Farm infrastructure projects, such as animal habitats, permanent shade structures, fencing, and building maintenance.
* Poultry production and care.
* Apprentices will participate in a cooking and a nutrition class given by a local chef.
* Apprentices will create photo, video, or audio presentations documenting their experiences on the farm.
* All participants will be involved in the planning of a community-wide celebration at the end of the Apprenticeship session.
How is the program structured?
* Each youth apprentice will be hired for either a 4 week or 8 week session and is expected to attend each week.
* Youth are expected to work four hours on each Saturday throughout their session. Work hours are from 8 a.m. until noon, moving to an earlier start time as temperatures increase.
* 16-18 year old apprentices will be paid a $200 stipend for an 8-week session.
* 13-15 year old apprentices will be paid a $100 stipend for a 4-week session.
* Stipends will be paid upon the completion of a session.
* Youth are responsible for their own food and snacks. Water will be provided, but youth need to bring their own water bottles.
* Youth will be evaluated by supervisors at the end of their session and will also have an opportunity to evaluate the program.
* Youth apprentices will complete a survey and other paperwork to be used in national documentation of youth service participation.
**Currently all youth will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the farm on workdays. If this is an inhibitive factor please contact the program and arrangements will be considered.
