AZHomegrownSolutions is a
volunteer-run 501c3 organization that depends on the talents and
skills of its membership to succeed. We are looking for
solutions-oriented people to help us out with the following
projects listed below.

Community & School Garden Team
AZHS is committed to helping community and school gardens
succeed. In order to do this we need people to assist us with the
following:
- Team Coordinator- helps organize tasks and volunteers and
manages the scope of the project (4-8 hrs per month)
- Interviewer to meet with existing community and school gardens
and interview the organizers and write up their stories for
publication online and in our newsletter (4-8 hrs per month)
- Workday coordinator to contact the gardens each month to find
out when their workdays are and post them to our events calendar
and other volunteer sites (4-8hrs per month)
- Resource list developer to add to our ever-evolving list of
resources available to community gardens (4-8 hrs per month)
- Cataloger for AZHS’s current community and school garden
resources. Also responsible for developing instructions on how to
request items from our resource bank and lending library as well as
how to donate items to these resources(20-25 hr one time
project)
- Relationship Developer to build relationships with local
businesses to acquire items such as expired seeds, surplus plants,
woodchips, etc. (4-8 hrs per month)
- Best Practices Developer to interview existing garden
coordinators about the process of setting up viable community and
school gardens and writing a booklet/pdf doc to serve as a
reference for new community gardens. (20-25 hrs one time
project)
- Green Mapper to add new community and school gardens to our
Open Green Map online. (4-8 hrs per month)
Resource Bank Team
This team will be focused on recovering locally available
resources to be repurposed primarily for community and school
gardens and other projects with partner organizations.
- Team Coordinator - helps organize tasks and volunteers and
manages the scope of the project (4-8 hrs per month)
- Community Garden Liaison - contacts our list of community and
school gardens to find out what their resource needs are and
creates a wish list for each project. (4-6 hrs per month)
- Online Freebie Finder - scours Freecycle, Craigslist and other
outlets of free materials for items on the wish list. Contacts the
material’s source and arranges for item pickup through the Pickup
Coordinator. (4-8 hrs per month)
- Resource Pickup Coordinator – identifies a pickup resource
person at each community and school garden and alerts the pickup
resource of the free item opportunity (2-4 hrs per month)
- Resource Bank Setup Team – Participates in the cleaning,
cataloging, testing and storing the materials at our storage garage
in Central Phoenix. (one time setup – 4 volunteers – 3 hrs
each)
Sustainable Mapping Team
AZHomegrownSolutions is the local partner of Open Green Maps, a
global mapping project to identify and map local green sites around
the world. The map is a citizen-driven project. Each local partner
establishes a goal for their map. Our map is designed to showcase
sites, public or private, that embody our mission of “discovering,
implementing and sharing local solutions”.
- Team Coordinator - helps organize tasks and volunteers and
manages the scope of the project as well as letting other
non-profits know that they can add the Green Map to their website
as a widget (4-8 hrs per month)
- Site Researchers (multiple opportunities) - finds new sites
that would be a good fit for the map, builds a spreadsheet with
site name, address, contact person, description of the site, web
address, photos etc. and inputs this to our Open Green Map (4-8 hrs
per month)
- Technical Writer - writes FAQs for how to use the map (one time
project 5-10 hrs)
Action Group Team
One of the key elements of sustainability is building a strong,
local community. The Phoenix metro area is sprawling so we’ve
developed Action Groups to bring people together where they live.
Help build community in YOUR part of the Valley by volunteering
with our Action Group Team.
- Team Coordinator - helps organize tasks and volunteers and
manages the scope of the project. Interfaces with the AZHS Steering
Committee. (4-8 hrs per month)
- Action Group Co-leaders – help to organize events movie nights,
potlucks, seed swaps, classes, etc in their part of town.
- (2-4 hrs per month)
- Action Group Solutioneers – help their Co-Leaders by
identifying local event venues, places of interest, resources,
projects that need help, partnership opportunities, etc. (2-4 hrs a
month)
- Action Group Technical Writers – help organize information
sheets, write best practices and compile information to help the
Action Groups succeed. (4-8 hrs per month)
