Charlie Calbom of the Hadley Farmship has presented the idea to AZHS for a “Shop for Nuestro Barrio Day” in which all vendors selling at the AZHS booth that day can choose to donate all or a portion their sells (and AZHS waves the 20% fee) to the Planting and Designing for Peace projects happening in the community. AZHS has selected March 27, 2010 for the event.
AZHS has made a commitment to Nuestro Barrio to help In their efforts to become a more sustainable community. This started last year with the planting of 100 native trees for the Planting for Peace. Then we helped install a community garden and irrigation system. Three residents agreed to host demonstration gardens. We have been working with them over the past month on installation. Through that process, we have partnered with a program of Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections for the youth to gain community services hours through working in the gardens (One of the DJC youth has designed our logo for the event and we are excited to show it off!). This has started gaining national attention and www.growinggreen.net came to film about our projects on February 23. We are gearing up to have 4-5 sites in the community be project sites for the Watershed Management Groups Water Harvesting Certification. We are very excited to have Brad Lancaster teaching the grey water class in the community! On April 24, we will be hosting the 2nd Annual Planting for Peace event. Whitfill Nursery has donated 100 trees for this project.
Even with all of the amazing partnerships, projects and donations, we are still lacking in some supplies. Your support in this Shop for Nuestro Barrio Day will make a significant impact. The garden participants in the community are currently looking towards our CET vendors as models for economic development. They are trying hard to be able to become vendors at the CET. We hope that together, AZHS, vendors, and NB gardeners can grow the Community Exchange Table to two booths
Wendy,
I should have about 20 pepper plants and some greens to bring to market. I will donate all of the sales to the project. Whatever doesn't sell can be taken out to the gardens for planting.
