So most of my purchases for my garden have been from Lowe's and that's served me well enough, but now I'm looking to buy some landscaping gravel, a bale of peatmoss and a number of other related items.  Does anyone have a recommendation for where I should get that sort of thing?

You can often find things free or cheap on Craigslist. For small supplies, try A&P Nurseries and Summer Wind Nursery

Landscaping gravel: Pioneer Landscaping Materials (a couple of locations in town)

Peat moss.....sometimes a problem to find any more because mining peat moss is unsustainable. Many places have turned to carrying spagnum moss. Most nurseries will carry this - Lowe's should too.

Ando - what part of town are you in? Then people can recommend a local favorite nursery. I love Baker's at 40th St and Osborn in Phoenix.

I'm in Chandler, right on the border of Mesa and Chandler in fact.

Sagnum moss is just as good? As long as it's dong whatever moss in soil needs to be doing (I presume creating pockets of air+extra organic material) it doesn't really matter to me what it's called :)

Thanks for all the recommendations so far. Being the snooty imported Seattliete I am, I really enjoying shopping local whenever it's convenient and economically feasible.

Harper's Nursery and Landscape Co. is also a great source for gardening plants and supplies. Jay Harper is a great guy and his family has been in business here for ages. Located at 1830 E McKellips Rd, Mesa on McKellips just west of Gilbert Rd.

x2 on Jay Harper. He and I just helped our the FFA with thier annual landscape contest for high school students. He's a great nurseryman and been around for a while.

Good advice on the thread so far. Definately get your gravel directly from a source like Pioneer. Generally, you will get the best deal by purchasing from a vendor closest to your home. I always tell my clients to go with 1/4" or 1/2" minus materials if they are set on doing decomosed granite products. It is the best material to grow wildflowers in and the easiest to run a Hula Hoe thru when it comes time to do some maintenance. Lots of folks around town use the 3/4" or larger "sized" material. This is chuncky rock which is difficult to rake and nearly impossible to run a Hula Hoe through.

In addition to my design & irrigation services, I sell plants through my company Eco Couture. If you need specialty plants like agaves, natives, or drought adapted plants, I can usually save you a bit of money compared to local retail nurseries or the Big Box garden centers. We work directly with local growers and propagate some of our own too. Feel free to contact me at jeff@ecocoutureaz.com if you need any help.

Check Craig's list for gravel, if you are up to shoveling and hauling off yourself! There always seems to be some free gravel on the list. How much gravel do you need? we have some extra if you have the muscle ;)

I try and buy from local nurseries like the ones mentioned. I have never added any peat or spagnum moss, just make our own compost instead as that is sustainable. And compost from Ken Signh Farms on the 101 and Thomas which is open ONLY on Saturday from 9-2 I believe. All local material and some good compost but only mix it 50/50 with our native soils!

I've got a huge sack of Singh compost sitting on my patio right now.

For now I only need about jeez... *does some quick math* 1 or 2 square feet worth? I'll need more later but I only have one planter built at the moment.
