Does Anyone Remember What An Egg Looked Like In 1955 ???

It is a sad reflection on technology when it is near impossible to find a person who actually remembers what an egg looks, tastes, or smells like. I for one, have some very nice memories of the wonderful sight of a pair of very colorful sunny side up eggs on a plate with bacon and hash browns along with a couple golden brown slices of real buttered toast. I would bet that its been a few years since anyone reading this has actually seen anything so mouth watering.

Today we might see a couple of nearly white yolks and sad excuses for pale brown pathetically thin slices of something proposed to be bacon along side something so unevenly colored it makes you wonder what in gods name was toasted and classified as bread. Really a cry from the wrong side of the kitchen of the damned!

If Anyone in the Vicinity of Mesa Arizona Knows where one can buy Eggs with taste and color,PLEASE contact me ASAP I am desperately seeking an honest to God egg from a chicken that has not been force fed only God knows what. If such a hen exists in todays world in the vicinity of Mesa Arizona I would be glad to become one of your best customers.

Clint:

Wish I lived closer to you (I'm in Central Phoenix). My hens, as well as those of many other backyard hen keepers lay beautiful eggs. When you crack them the yolks are hearty and orangish in color - not pale or yellow. The whites too seem to be "robust" - like they have more body to them. I don't think I could eat store-bought eggs any more.

I don't remember what an egg looked like in 1955 - but I have the excuse of not being born yet. However, we lived overseas in Africa a lot in the 60s and 70s and bought eggs from local village women and they are as you describe above.

I hope you find a backyard hen enthusiast in Mesa. Now I want eggs for dinner!

Hi Jen
I thank you for the reply. I was beginning to think no one in todays world knew what an egg from a non forcefed hen looked like. I wish I had a place to keep a few chickens but alas I live in an apartment and I am disabled so I cant even rent a place in the sticks to keep a few (cant care for them). I do not know if you are interested in selling eggs but if you are i have nothing against driving to Phoenix or flagstaff or damn near anyplace if i could buy a few dozen real eggs at a time.

as you yourself have noticed eggs bought in a store are nothing even similar to eggs from the backyard or barnyard where the chickens walk around and peck for their suppliments instead of being confined to a three foot square space and force fed only god knows what. backyard eggs are not easy to find these days. if you happen to have an abundant supply and a desire for a few extra bucks let me know and perhaps we can work something of mutual benifit out.

It ain't just eggs, this is the corporate food chain we rail about. The relocalization of the food chain is the be all and end all of our time. It will give us so much more than good tasting eggs, it will give us FREEDOM.
There are tons of people keeping chickens in the valley now, and Mesa has relatively relaxed laws about backyard hens. There are definitely people in your area with chickens. What are your cross-streets? Not that I'm trying to discourage you from buying Jen's extra eggs... she has some happy chickens. :)

Clint - I agree with Rachel - let's keep it as local as possible! Why don't you start a forum post called "looking to buy backyard eggs in MESA" - that might get you more information specific to your area.

Jen
Clint, there are a lot more of us keeping chickens then you think! More all the time. One suggestion I would have would be to check craigslist, type in "eggs" in the search box. I'm in North Phoenix and know quite a few in a few mile range who have extra eggs, I imagine if you let it be known (as you are), you will get some local responses!
I want to thank all who replied. it has been a learning experience for me. I found a source for back yard eggs and i am very happy to have been a partisipant here. thanks again to all who were interested.
