Hello all.

I'm wondering if chickens would eat big cockroaches. Because I'd sure like to be rid of some.

I'm a volunteer for the Center for Native and Urban Wildlife at Scottsdale CC, and in an effort to provide some food for our carnivores, we began keeping Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. Well, the plan didn't work and we have a LOT of cockroaches- all captive btw.

They are quite different from other roaches in that they do not have wings, are much larger, and not quite as fast. They are often kept as pets- though I can't say why. :)

Please advise...

Most likely adult chickens will kill and eat them, but I would suggest giving them some mouth wash after. :) Yeck!

Adult chickens are fairly agressive when it comes to something they see a dinner, giving the the coakroaches one at a time so they do not get away should work, don't want those buggers running around and breeding.

Great! One at a time it is then.
Anybody want some free chicken food?

Are they still available? Hubs and I have about 9 chickens who would love that tasty treat.

Please email me at az1cowgirl@msn.com to let me know.

Thanks

Hi Linda!
Yes, we do still have lots of the roaches available. Funny thing about them-- they just keep coming. :)
I spoke with our animal exhibits curator and she'd prefer to try offering up some big males first. How many would you like?
They are available for pickup at Scottsdale Community college during business hours, or after 6pm while Natalie (the curator) is there cleaning up and caring for the animals in preparation for the next day's tours.
Let me know!
Thanks,
Stacie

We will take whatever you want to give. Our chickens love the bugs! My hubs works in the area and can come by after work sometime. Please just tell me where to send him and what sort of container to send with him. I'm thinking a plastic bin or two about the size of a shoe box?

Thank you,
Linda

That's fantastic news! I know we've got over 300 males alone. Let me touch base with Natalie to confirm what she wants to part with and how we'll "package" them. Could you use that many?

Wow, that's A LOT! Can we take them a little at a time, like say about 50 or so at a time. I'm afraid that our chickens can't eat them fast enough before they die. But yes, we will take what you have to offer...it might just have to be in smaller batches!

Ha! A lot is definitely the case. Now you know why I'm so inclined to offer them to the chicks!
Is there anyway I can contact you directly? Natalie has some information I'd like to forward so that we can make pickup arrangements.
Thanks!

Hi all, my chickens would love some too if there are any available after others have had their share. Aren't these roaches the type that are so clean they use them to clean hospitals in some areas? I seem to remember learning some things about them at the Phoenix Zoo years ago. Anyway, they can have a home in my compost pile and with my chickens if needed. I'm sorry they didn't work out in your plans.

Hi Jane,
I've not heard that about the hissing roaches, but I'm never surprised about the amazing things we learn from nature.
I'm checking in with Natalie about her "stock", but will let you know asap if we've still got excess.
Thanks for your interest! I'd love to say goodbye to these guys, cool as they are. Our facility was meant for native critters only, and these guys were supposed to be food, not an exhibit! :)

I'm interested too and am off the 101 on the east side.....I'd take any package you have left over after all the others "orders" are in....thanks!
